The old Ross Historic cemetery comes next and there are sweeping views over Ross and the Tasman Sea you will discover many a sad tale of drowning and mining accidents. This is a walk that people of a medium to low fitness can enjoy.

Mount Greenland, Ross

7 hours return

This walk follows a very rough and un-maintained road to the top of Mount Greenland. The road is a steady incline and mostly follows an old miner’s pack track. It passes through tall rimu forest then several changes in vegetation type can be seen as altitude is gained. On a clear day, the tussock covered top of Mount Greenland has amazing views in every direction.

You should carry warm clothing, a raincoat and take plenty of food and water for the journey. Strong shoes or tramping boots are recommended, and the walk is suitable for those with a medium to good level of fitness.

Note: Beyond the summit, the road continues steeply downhill to the site of the old mining village at the back of Mt Greenland. This will add several hours to the journey and is not recommended as a day walk.

Hokitika Gorge

Heading North there is Hokitika Gorge with its stunning blue water and easy walking trail, and whilst out that way check out the Lake Kaniere area. Just beautiful.|

Sometimes you see photos of a tourist spot and think yeah right, it can’t look as good as that in real life however,  the Hokitika Gorge is one of those places. The vivid turquoise water surrounded by lush native bush looks too good to be true but trust us, it is well worth a visit.

The Hokitika Gorge is 33kms from Hokitika.

Glacier country scenic flights
We just had two fantastic nights at Ross Beach Top 10 Holiday Park. We had a powered site for our caravan and the location was awesome - watching the sunset right in front of the caravan. The communal kitchen facilities and ablution block are amazing - very clean and well looked after. This place is a credit to the region and a real jewel in the crown. There are also self-contained options in tastefully decorated recycled shipping containers. Gem of a place right on the beach and close to the start/finish of the West Coast Wilderness Trail. Can't wait to go back.
